Encaustic Collage

This wonderful image, known as Santa Maria Nova, is one of the earliest encaustic paintings of the Madonna ever found. Discovered under many layers of old paintings, it dates back to the 7th century! Currently on view at the Santa Francesca Romana monastery in Rome. Sister Wendy Beckett says "It is the most exquisite of all images ever painted of Mary." I am drawn to her intense eyes and compellingly fierce expression, not a woman you mess with! Such a powerful icon to have in your life. Antique image with encaustic wax is framed in aged patinated copper.
